"The Trials of Trump: Finding a Defense Team Amidst Turmoil and Controversy"

Former President Donald Trump is facing federal criminal charges for retaining national security materials and obstruction of justice. He has been trying to recruit a local Florida lawyer to join his defense team, but has been unsuccessful so far. Trump's existing lawyers, Todd Blanche and Chris Kise, will be representing him at his first court appearance. His co-defendant, valet Walt Nauta, will be represented by Stanley Woodwar.

Trump and his legal team conducted interviews with potential lawyers but none of them joined the team in time for his initial court appearance. Trump has also been struggling to find a specialist national security lawyer due to the Espionage Act charges. His reputation as a difficult client and concerns about reputational damage have deterred lawyers from representing him. Trump has a history of declining legal advice and wanting his lawyers to act more as attack dogs or political aides.

The indictment against Trump provides compelling evidence of his efforts to retain sensitive information and obstruct the government. Trump is still searching for a lawyer similar to his former mentor, Roy Cohn. The fear of being asked to engage in questionable actions, like turning against former lawyer Evan Corcoran, has deterred potential lawyers.

Blanche will take the lead role in the Mar-a-Lago documents case, as well as defend Trump against state charges in New York. Kise, on the other hand, primarily handles civil litigation for Trump. The search for Florida lawyers came after turmoil and infighting within Trump's legal team, leading to the departure of lawyers Jim Trusty and John Rowley.
